Blade Holders

New: Blade Holder BH 500 for ultra-thin DSAEK

The new trend in DSAEK is to implant ultra-thin Descemet’s lamellae. In order to achieve such a  lamella, a thick free cap lamella of a large diameter and consistent depths in the donor cornea is essential: the new AMADEUS II 500 micron blade holder provides such superior results.

Four years ago Ziemer introduced the AMADEUS II  Anterior Artificial Chamber and has improved it since in various ways. The AMADEUS II AAC has been very successful espe-cially for DSAEK (Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty) because it is the only microkeratome currently on the  market capable of providing deep cutting depths down to 500 microns.

The new 500 micron blade holder 500 has been tested successfully in our lab on human corneas, with great results. The cutting variation, as always for Lamellar Keratoplasty, is around 15% of the nominal value.Very good results have also been achieved in surgeries performed in Spain and Switzerland.

We at Ziemer believe that the AMADEUS II AAC, coupled with the new BH 500, so improves DSAEK that followers of the new trend DMEK (Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) will be brought back to the safer and easier DSAEK procedure. With DMEK only the Descemet Membrane and endothelial cells are transplanted, but to prepare such a graft manually requires skill and carries a high risk of destroying the  corneal graft. Critics say that the risk of losing a valuable corneal graft is unacceptably high and the learning curve too long to justify the minimal improvement compared to DSAEK.

Blade Holder BH 120

With the BH 120, flaps with a uniform, consistent thickness of 120 µm can now be prepared, giving you access to the inherent advantages of thinner Flaps:

  • Wider range of patients for amenable to treatment
  • Opportunity to treat patients with thin corneas and / or higher corrections
  • Higher corneal integrity (biomechanics)
  • Lower risk of Ectasia
  • Less dry eye post-op (less nerve damage)
  • Reports of better contrast sensitivity due to lack of HOAs (Higher Order Aberrations) induced by thick flaps

BH 120: Smooth stromal bed, planar flap, predictable and constant thickness.
