The PASCAL Tonometry Recording System

Effective January 1, 2009, Category III CPT Code 0198T (measurement of ocular blood flow by repetitive intraocular pressure sampling, with interpretation and report) has been assigned by the AMA (American Medical Association). Measuring the ocular pressure curve with the PASCAL DCT is therefore now a billable procedure in the United States.
To make documenting the measurement easy, Ziemer has created the PASCAL TRS Tonometry Recording System. It combines the proven PASCAL Dynamic Contour Tonometer with an elegant subnotebook PC. The PC receives PASCAL data over a Bluetooth link and generates a diagnostic report that can be appended to the patient’s electronic medical record and serves to document the procedure for billing purposes.

How to get reimbursement

At this time, a temporary reimbursement code has been assigned to the procedure. It is up to each insurance carrier to determine the amount they choose to reimburse, and whether they will reimburse at all. To support the process of getting a ruling on reimbursement, claims for reimbursement should be submitted to carriers. Our customers have reported that some carriers will indeed reimburse for CPT 0198T.

On the other hand, practitioners may bill their patients for the procedure. The amount they charge is at each doctor's discretion. To obtain payment from patients, you should have the patient sign an advance beneficiary note (ABN) prior to performing the procedure.

For our customers' convenience, the  Corocoran Consulting Group has issued a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) document that describes the situation and the administrative procedures to be followed.
